Many of the legitimate articles take you to sites that require a paid subscription. To my knowledge, there is no way to alter the settings in the app to avoid this. Worse, the app hardly even works lately. Restarting the app does not help. So sad to see it go from one of my favorite apps to the glitchy mess it is now.
Update Oct. You often have to wait a very long time for an article to become readable as the multitude of ads and pop-ups load. Sometimes there are so many ads loading that the article hangs and never becomes readable. This is not necessary. Other apps, such as Microsoft News seem to be able to include advertising without interupting the articles or being intrusive.
Flipboard authors try to blame this on external sites that they have no control over. Clean this up Flipboard and you could be a model for a fine app. As it is, it stinks. The sources of news for special interests seem unmatched. However, I am totally fed up with the constant bombardment of ads popping up all over the place often popping up over an article that I am trying to read.
Often the way to dismiss the ads is not obvious and is very frustrating. Also, too many partial articles that are interupted by a statement that if you want to read the entire article, you need to subscribe to this source. I have finally deleted this app. That being said the comments on the articles contain quite a lot of activity from accounts that, once you click into, are fairly suspect. Also the app will pulp articles from outlets that, when you do some light digging, are actually not correct.
How are you protecting against bringing in sites spreading misinformation? Just some thoughts. Update Lowered star rating due to now getting random posts from Reddit and am not allowed to remove as a source for content.
Stories repeat, seems even less content is being pulled so nothing new to see and rather dull. The moderation is a joke and so is this app. I have used Flipboard for years. These ads are generally embedded within the articles, but the bottom of the articles also have utterly ridiculous ads.
I even use two ad blockers. I cannot figure out how to suppress them. I would like for Flipboard to provide a mechanism for removing the ads, like other apps such as the MSN News app and the Apple News app. Honestly I used to love flipboard. However nowadays it seems like every other article is about coronavirus.
Then i discovered the less like this button. I was hype i was finally going to be able to see less coronavirus articles I was wrong. Not to mention one of my family members uses this app and the amount she has freaked out abt the virus is due to this app.
It has completely scared the bejesus out of her. But the reader view, which automatically attempts to convert many articles and posts, is very slow and glitchy.
Also, since the reader view seems to be designed to cut down on clutter, some photos might be removed if and when it does open. Again, the reader view is automatic on many articles and posts.
Flipboard has been a great source for me for several years, but the reader view has been awful! Clear the reader view is supposed to improve user experience, but it has ruined it for me.
I had used this app for a while, was able to select my news without issue. That being said, I would open the app and see Progressive editor choice articles. Today when I opened up the app there was a child who was part of the FL school massacre on the top of the app.
Many of us in this country view the use of these kids to push an agenda as child abuse. They can be seen reading off talking points and being interviewed after shooting- it's reprehensible that these stories are published. It was so distasteful to have this content pushed in front of me. Just the way I feel about these news apps.
My big problem is with customization. When you first start the app, it lets you select from hundreds of topics to follow, and then I mute a source, and a couple of days later, the source is back. I spend much more time muting and trying to see less of topics then I actually spend reading stories. Some stories have ads literally between each individual sentence. Fortunately, there is an option to just open the story in Safari where I just use an ad blocker. The ads have progressively gotten worse again, though this time from the platform itself.
I stopped using and uninstalled it before because of the major use of literally constant intrusive advertising by the content providers within the articles themselves.
There are even video ads now at the top of the screen- the home screen of the platform!!! Are you kidding me?? Uninstalling once again.
Shame on you, flipboard!! Not only did I see stories with nipples-through-shirt and bikinis, but I found pasties and women with no bikini bottoms on. You know what else, I found pictures of men ejaculating on other men and orgies!
Simply unacceptable!! I demand this be fixed! What if children are using this app? There could be little kids looking at this stuff! I propose a policy change that any post rated as sexually-explicit will result in a ban of the publisher. At least clean up your content, please? I have been using this app for well over a year now. Unfortunately it runs very buggy all the time now. Reached out for support and tried all the suggestions to no avail.
I guess successful loading of simple news articles with text is rocket science?? I was so in love with this app and been very tolerant in hopes maybe the developers would resolve these issues but enough is enough.. When I first came across this app, it was a great source for news and other meaningful current events and topics From the trolls to the easily insulted by opinion or differing viewpoints. From hate, political insanity, and racism, to Misogyny this app runs the gambit of everything you might dislike in a toxic community.
Does anyone actually review their complaints for legitimacy?! It seems like anyone can simply report another user and off goes their email without any manner of verification as to the facts. Absolutely would give this a rating if it was not for the toxic community around it.
I just want to read the news. For me, the bottom line is that Flipboard was among my favorite apps for years one of the first iPad apps I ever downloaded and used regularly but the experience has been decimated by increasingly intrusive ads. Update: The boards have a very arbitrary monitoring policy. You never really know if a post is violating rules or not because they are unfairly applied. I had a post that was deleted that had no profanity, yet the one below mine which did, stayed.
The above, coupled with the incredible battery drain that the app has on my iPad, caused me to delete it. I really like the way Flipboard can pull information from all over the web and compile it into an easy to use collection. But be careful, anyone can flag you and then you get an email from the Admin for I can also watch my iPad battery go to near zero within two hours of use.
I have used it since it was first offered. Presentation of the material, including its use of graphics is excellent, and the varied page layout styles add interest. The user feedback on interests does indeed influence the selection of content. I would rate it 5-stars for that, except for the pop-ups. Try this Want to have some fun? Go try to Google anything negative at all about Flipboard. Really dig deep. That's what it's like to use Flipboard. Expect to have discussions vanish if they become heated.
Literally the entire flip hidden from public view. If you somehow find it again through Batman level detective tenacity, it will inform you that it's suddenly "Hidden Sources" even though you have no hidden sources. Try Googling the words "Flipboard Hidden Sources".
No hits? That's weird. You'll be gaslighted when you complain about this or be patronized and told "We're looking into it. I regret ever reinstalling this garbage. Oh, Google that too.
It's so freaking clean it's like Google has been coated with hydrophobic spray. I wonder how much that cost? This app used to be my go-to news app.
I gained followers, shared thousands of articles to topics that mattered to me, and found news articles I would have never been presented with anywhere else that helped me learn more about the world. Unfortunately now I am bombarded with ad after we that makes it difficult to navigate the app, much less discerne between ads and actual articles. There has to be a better way of growing this app without causing so much chaos within it.
I reinstalled the app recently. Apple News works well enough! Good job devs. Not worth it! Flipboard is becoming less and less easy to use.
I used to love being able to flip through current news and read stories of interest. But in the last year the service keeps pushing more and more garbage at me. It keeps adding local radio stations and newspapers in podunk towns in the US, UK, Australia, and India, which are full of irrelevant stories. Plus it keeps adding marketing sites; political advocacy sites; and other questionable, low-quality stuff that is definitely not news.
And pushing topics I have no interest in like gaming and blockchain even though I keep doing the Show Less thing. Honestly, they are making it too hard to use the app to get real value. Two stars is probably for the nostalgia of what it once was - steering away from one star just to be kind. Used to be my go-to for news.
Loved the way you can curate your newsfeed. But now the ads override the content - it has become so ad-driven that a it takes forever for the actual content to load, and b I have had articles "refresh" three or four times during a reading to load new ads, always with the content loading last. I'm one or two more frustrations from deleting it permanently.
If anyone has any alternative apps, please share. Started using Flipboard many years ago on my iPod Touch, and it instantly changed my life. There were no ads. It was only greatness as fast as you could flip. And when they added tuning options it was just about perfect. Apple and Flipboard stopped updating that old iPod, and so I get to compare the classic to this hunk of garbage that abuses my eyeballs every chance it gets.
For that it dropped two stars. Then for some unholy reason they started sneaking in stories that turned out to be Sponsored Content. They got me good there. They actually made a business plan to trick me!
Ching went the counter with a sound that can only be enjoyed by those that oppress others for fun. Heaven help you if you actually try to scroll the article downward. Got you again. As soon as you move it, pop up ads! Flipboard-Latest Stories does not load or only very slowly despite internet connection? Then find out here what you can do if Flipboard-Latest Stories cannot be loaded.
It can be quite annoying when an app from the App Store cannot be loaded and thus updated. The download or update is started, but only a fraction of the app is loaded after hours. If Flipboard is out of date, it can cause the app to crash each time you open it.
To fix this, update the app from your devices app drawer. Force quit and restart Flipboard. Many devices today keep apps running in the background all the time, which is useful, but can sometimes result in apps that don't behave well. In the case of Flipboard, a simple restart could solve crashing or refresh problems you may be experiencing.
To force quit an app on Android , you'll need to use the Apps Manager. Restart your device. If it seems that Flipboard isn't updating, try restarting your device. A restart often seems to work to to clear fuzzy errors, reconnect networks, and other minor issues that are mostly unnoticeable because they don't affect all aspects of your device.
Check to see if Flipboard is down. Occasionally, the Flipboard networks will be down for maintenance. One way to find out if the problem is on Flipboard's side is to go a website service that monitors site health, like Downdetector, to see if Flipboard is down or if the problem is on your end.
When all else fails, contact Flipboard's Tech Support. At the top, select Contact Us.
