However, it is very important to note that axolotls do not shed their skin naturally or regularly. If the axolotl is shedding its skin, it means there is something wrong. It is a sign that something is not right. One of the reasons why your axolotl may be shedding its skin is because there is chlorine or chloramine in the water.
If you use tap water for your axolotl tank , if your water treatment plant uses chlorine, you need to let that water sit for about a full day to let the chlorine dissipate.
If there is chloramine in the water, a harsher version of chlorine which does not naturally dissipate , you will need to use a dechlorinating agent to get rid of the chloramine.
Whether chlorine or chloramine, both will literally burn the slime coat and skin of the axolotl, thus causing it to shed. Strictly speaking, you should never use untreated tap water for any aquarium. If there are various heavy metals present in the water, these will also cause your axolotl to shed its slime coat and potentially its skin too. Various heavy metals will not only cause the axolotl to shed, but they can also cause organ failure and death. It is important to use a water conditioner which can remove heavy metals for axolotl tanks.
Just like with chlorine, no matter the animal in the aquarium, there should not be any heavy metals present in the water. Stress is another cause which may lead to an axolotl shedding its slime coat and potentially the skin. Stress can be caused by a number of factors including excessive handling, improper feeding, bad tank mates, and bad water conditions.
One of the leading causes of stress in axolotls is if they are kept with the wrong tank mates. Any very quick swimming, large, aggressive, and territorial fish should not be kept with axolotls. Another leading cause of axolotl shedding is ammonia in the water. Ammonia is released by rotting plants, uneaten food, and fish waste. My bosses son had them for 2yrs, he wasn't taken care of them anymore so my boss was giving them away. Before I took them I did research on how to take care of them.
It's been almost 3 months. They seem so happy since when i first got them. This started now 4 days ago. I read things that say they do shed than ones that say they don't. He really looks like he's going to shed. They have grown alot since I've had them. Thank you. You must log in or register to reply here. Log in. Install the app.

There are some like the brine shrimp that only grow in very salty water. These kind don't live very long in the freshwater of an axolotl tank and will contribute to fouling if they are uneaten. Other types of 'fairy shrimp' live in freshwater; these kinds would make better food, IMO. Unlike Oct 28, Unlike Nov 3, Unlike Nov 4, The fridge treatment worked! Unlike Friday at AM. AxieMom ig- : hello, i wanted to ask if somebody can help me with my axolotl.
I think he has red leg. Unlike Friday at PM. AxieMom ig- : his tail, hands, and feet have red spots. I wanted to attempt the salt bath method, but I am afraid to do it because I don't know how to.
Exoskeletons don't grow. So a spider will create a newer, bigger exoskeleton as it grows. They shed the old one in a process called molting. They have to do this a lot of times until they're fully grown. The new leg will usually be a bit smaller than the other seven. Toggle navigation Menu. Explore Videos Games. Explore All. If the ammonia level in the tank continues to rise, and you leave it for a long time, the axolotls can get ammonia burn and the axolotl shedding their gills.
Clean the water in the tank by cleaning uneaten food, axolotl waste, or dead plants. Do a water change to increase the oxygen supply in the axolotl tank. After the tank cleaning process is complete, see the condition of the axolotl in the next few hours. If their conditions are better, then the main problem with shedding gills is dirty water. Axolotl has a slimy substance to protect its skin from bacteria, fungus, or harmful particles.
The slimy skin keeps its body moist and regulates its temperature. When axolotl shedding due to poor water conditions, the first thing to shed is the slimy coat before the axolotl skin. If the slimy skin is damaged, it will look like a white sheen and become a reference if the water in the axolotl tank needs to be cleaned.
Do not leave the axolotl in dirty water for a long time so that the axolotl is not stressed and susceptible to any diseases. Most animals that live in water will be slimy because the texture of their skin is mixed with water. You can check the slimy body of an axolotl by taking it out of the water for a moment.
Axolotls can only last a short time in the land until their bodies are dry before they run out of breath. Although axolotls have lungs, they cannot use their lungs to breathe normally like other adult salamanders. Axolotl also has a slimy coat that serves to protect their skin from any harmful particles. If you want to move the axolotl temporarily, prepare another tank with dechlorinated water and put the axolotl there while you clean the axolotl tank. Do not leave the axolotl outside the tank.
Axolotls can only survive out of the water until their bodies dry up. Young axolotls will secrete white mucus more often than adults.
If the white mucus makes the axolotl tank slimy, lift the axolotl and place the axolotl elsewhere while you clean the tank.
Algae can also cause slime in the places where they grow. If the axolotl tank has algae, it is a sign the water is not clean. If you have more than one young axolotl in the same tank , more slime is produced, and you need more time to clean the tank. Clean the water and replace the water with dechlorinated water until the slime is gone.
If axolotl still produces a lot of slimes you need to clean the water in the tank more often so that the water parameters meet the requirements. Clean the tank glass from the slime. The slime can be mixed again with the water, if the slime stuck to the glass is not cleaned or when you fill it with new water.
